How to enter Annual Tax Report components for Vanguard Personal Investor
Vanguard Personal Investor is an IDPS-like scheme. For tax purposes you're treated as holding the underlying ETFs and funds directly, so each fund is a separate trust and needs its own set of tax components in Sharesight.
At tax time Vanguard Personal Investor provides an Annual Tax Report. The components you need are in a section toward the back called "Australian trust distribution income and tax information", which breaks the figures down per fund (by code) — so you can read each fund's components straight off the report and enter them against the matching holding in Sharesight.
Before you start
- Your Vanguard Personal Investor Annual Tax Report for the financial year.
- Your Vanguard Personal Investor trades already imported into your Sharesight portfolio.
Step 1 — Find the per-fund tax section
In your Annual Tax Report, scroll to Australian trust distribution income and tax information (usually toward the end). This section lists each fund you hold by code, with its tax components for the year. You'll also use the AMIT cost base net amount information section a little further down.
Step 2 — Enter each fund's components into Sharesight
Enter one set of components per holding, using that fund's figures for the financial year. Open the Enter Annual Tax Statement Components form — see How to enter AMIT components in Sharesight for how to reach it — then map the report columns to the Sharesight fields using the tables below.
Where a Sharesight field says add together, sum every listed column and enter the total in that one field.
Australian income
| Vanguard column | Sharesight field |
|---|---|
| Franked amount (including franking tax credits) | 13C |
| Unfranked amounts | 13U — add together |
| Franking tax credits | 13Q |
| Interest income | 13U — add together |
| Other deductions | 13Y — no Sharesight field, do not enter |
| Vanguard column | Sharesight field |
|---|---|
| NCMI – Primary Production | 13L — no Sharesight field, do not enter |
| Primary Production Excl. NCMI | 13L — no Sharesight field, do not enter |
| Other income | 13U — add together |
| Other income - CBMI | 13U — add together |
| Other Income excl. NCMI | 13U — add together |
| Other Income - NCMI | 13U — add together |
Watch out: the two primary production columns sit immediately before the four that feed 13U. Don't sweep them in.
Trust distributions from foreign source
| Vanguard column | Sharesight field |
|---|---|
| Assessable foreign source income (Including tax offsets) | 20E and 20M — enter in both |
| Attributable income CFC | 19K — no Sharesight field, do not enter |
| Non-taxable income | No Sharesight field, do not enter |
| Foreign income tax offsets | 20O — add together |
Non-assessable income
| Vanguard column | Sharesight field |
|---|---|
| Return of capital | No Sharesight field, do not enter |
| Tax free | No Sharesight field, do not enter |
| Tax deferred | No Sharesight field, do not enter |
| Tax exempt | No Sharesight field, do not enter |
| Non-assessable non-exempt income | No Sharesight field, do not enter |
Note: these are already reflected in the AMIT cost base amounts below. Entering them as well counts the same cost base movement twice.
Capital gains
You enter three fields here — Discounted capital gains, Capital gains and CGT concession. Sharesight then calculates 18A and 18H for you.
| Vanguard column | Sharesight field |
|---|---|
| Discounted capital gains TAP | Discounted capital gains — add together |
| Discounted capital gains TAP - CBMI | Discounted capital gains — add together |
| Discounted capital gains TAP excluding NCMI | Discounted capital gains — add together |
| Discounted capital gains TAP - NCMI | Discounted capital gains — add together |
| Discounted capital gains non-TAP | Discounted capital gains — add together |
| Vanguard column | Sharesight field |
|---|---|
| CGT concession | CGT concession — add together |
| CGT concession - CBMI | CGT concession — add together |
| CGT concession excluding NCMI | CGT concession — add together |
| CGT concession - NCMI | CGT concession — add together |
| Index capital gains TAP | Capital gains — add together |
| Index capital gains non-TAP | Capital gains — add together |
Watch this one: this table splits two ways. The four CGT concession columns go to one field; the two Index capital gains columns go to another.
| Vanguard column | Sharesight field |
|---|---|
| Other capital gains TAP | Capital gains — add together |
| Other capital gains TAP - CBMI | Capital gains — add together |
| Other capital gains TAP excluding NCMI | Capital gains — add together |
| Other capital gains TAP - NCMI | Capital gains — add together |
| Other capital gains non-TAP | Capital gains — add together |
| Vanguard column | Sharesight field |
|---|---|
| Foreign capital gains - Indexation method | Capital gains — add together |
| Foreign offset CGT - Indexed | 20O — add together |
| Foreign capital gains - Discounted method | Discounted capital gains — add together |
| Foreign offset CGT - Discounted method | 20O — add together |
| Foreign capital gains - Other | Capital gains — add together |
| Foreign offset credits - Other | 20O — add together |
| Foreign capital gains - Concessional method | CGT concession — add together |
18A and 18H: Sharesight fills these in for you. Don't copy them from the front of your report — they also include gains and losses from your own buying and selling, which Sharesight already works out from your trades.
TFN withholding credits and non-resident withholding tax
| Vanguard column | Sharesight field |
|---|---|
| TFN withholding credits | 13R |
| Non-resident withholding tax | 13A — no Sharesight field, do not enter |
AMIT cost base net amount information
| Vanguard column | Sharesight field |
|---|---|
| Excess (reduce cost base) | AMIT decrease |
| Shortfall (increase cost base) | AMIT increase |
Use this per-fund table, which lists each fund by code. The two-line AMIT summary earlier in the report nets excess against shortfall across all funds and can't be split back out.
Repeat for each fund until every holding has its own set of components entered.
⚠️ You must Save and confirm. Until you save and confirm the distribution, its attributed discounted and other capital gains won't appear in your Capital Gains Tax Report — so your capital gains will be understated compared with the ATO's pre-fill in myTax. This applies whether Sharesight pre-filled the estimated components for you or you entered them manually.
Tip — reconcile at the right level. Each fund's distributions in Sharesight should add up to that fund's totals in the per-fund section of your Annual Tax Report. The summary figures at the front of the report will only match the sum across all your holdings, not any single fund.
