How to enter Annual Tax Report components for Vanguard Personal Investor

How to enter Annual Tax Report components for Vanguard Personal Investor

Vanguard Personal Investor is an IDPS-like scheme. For tax purposes you're treated as holding the underlying ETFs and funds directly, so each fund is a separate trust and needs its own set of tax components in Sharesight.

At tax time Vanguard Personal Investor provides an Annual Tax Report. The components you need are in a section toward the back called "Australian trust distribution income and tax information", which breaks the figures down per fund (by code) — so you can read each fund's components straight off the report and enter them against the matching holding in Sharesight.

Before you start

  • Your Vanguard Personal Investor Annual Tax Report for the financial year.
  • Your Vanguard Personal Investor trades already imported into your Sharesight portfolio.

Step 1 — Find the per-fund tax section

In your Annual Tax Report, scroll to Australian trust distribution income and tax information (usually toward the end). This section lists each fund you hold by code, with its tax components for the year. You'll also use the AMIT cost base net amount information section a little further down.

Step 2 — Enter each fund's components into Sharesight

Enter one set of components per holding, using that fund's figures for the financial year. Open the Enter Annual Tax Statement Components form — see How to enter AMIT components in Sharesight for how to reach it — then map the report columns to the Sharesight fields using the tables below.

Where a Sharesight field says add together, sum every listed column and enter the total in that one field.

Watch out: the two primary production columns sit immediately before the four that feed 13U. Don't sweep them in.

Note: these are already reflected in the AMIT cost base amounts below. Entering them as well counts the same cost base movement twice.

Capital gains

You enter three fields here — Discounted capital gains, Capital gains and CGT concession. Sharesight then calculates 18A and 18H for you.

18A and 18H: Sharesight fills these in for you. Don't copy them from the front of your report — they also include gains and losses from your own buying and selling, which Sharesight already works out from your trades.

AMIT cost base net amount information

Vanguard columnSharesight field
Excess (reduce cost base)AMIT decrease
Shortfall (increase cost base)AMIT increase
Use this per-fund table, which lists each fund by code. The two-line AMIT summary earlier in the report nets excess against shortfall across all funds and can't be split back out.

Repeat for each fund until every holding has its own set of components entered.

Tip — reconcile at the right level. Each fund's distributions in Sharesight should add up to that fund's totals in the per-fund section of your Annual Tax Report. The summary figures at the front of the report will only match the sum across all your holdings, not any single fund.
