How can we help?

Sync trades and payouts

Sharesight's Cash Account Sync feature simplifies tracking your brokerage and bank account balances by bringing them together in one place. This provides a clear view of your total net worth and helps you stay on top of your finances with ease.

Assign a broker to your trades and dividends

For Sharesight to know which trades and dividends should flow into which cash account — they may come from different markets and different brokers — it needs to know where each one came from. It works this out from the broker assigned to each trade.

Sharesight assigns a broker automatically if you:

  • have a direct broker integration (API connection),
  • have uploaded a supported broker file, or
  • have forwarded your trade confirmations.

Check or set the broker on a trade: go to the holding page, open Trades & Income, select a buy or sell trade and click Edit. The assigned broker appears under the Broker section — if none is listed, you can enter it there.

Broker on a trade

Assign a broker to a whole holding (and its dividends): go to Edit Holding, select your broker under Broker/Trading Platform, and apply the changes. This also assigns your dividends to that broker, so you can sync them to the broker's cash account once you've created it.

Create your cash accounts

Once you've assigned brokers, create the cash accounts you'll sync into. How many you need depends on how many markets and brokers you trade with.

Rule of thumb: one cash account per market, times the number of brokers. For example, if you trade both the ASX and US markets through a single broker, that's two accounts (one per market). Use two brokers for those same markets and it doubles to four.

To create one, go to Add investment > Cash account, pick a currency and give it a name:

  • The currency follows the market — ASX trades are AUD, US trades USD, UK trades GBP, and so on.
  • Name it after the broker and currency (e.g. "Commsec ASX", "Commsec USD") so it's easy to recognise.

See Creating a cash account for the full steps.

Now connect each broker to the cash account its trades and dividends should sync into.

  1. Go to Settings > Cash accounts. You'll see a list of your brokers.

Settings > Cash accounts

  1. Next to each broker, use the dropdown to choose which cash account to sync its trades and dividends into.

  2. If you trade more than one market with that broker, click + Add another cash account and select the cash account for the second market — for example, ASX trades → your AUD account, US trades → your USD account.

Broker to cash account mapping

  1. Click Apply changes.

Heads-up — the home-currency catch: if you set up only your home-market account (e.g. ASX/AUD) and skip the US one, your US trades won't stay separate — Sharesight routes everything to your home-currency account until the other trades have somewhere to go. The fix is two steps together: create the US cash account, and point your US trades to it. Do both and they separate cleanly.

Dividends

Dividends sync the same way as your trades. Once you've assigned a broker to a holding (which also assigns its dividends) and confirmed the dividend from the Tasks tab, it flows into the same cash account you mapped for that broker.

Only confirmed dividends sync. A dividend is only synced into a cash account once it's confirmed — confirm them from the Tasks tab.

Sync your trades

  1. Open the cash account from your investments page and click Manage synced trades.

Manage synced trades

  1. Choose to sync from inception or from a specific date.

Sync trades from date

  1. Either way, create a starting balance for the account — and add one every time you have a deposit or withdrawal, so the balance stays accurate.

Repeat for your remaining cash accounts. From then on, every buy or sell trade that comes in — and every dividend you confirm — automatically shows up in the matching cash account.

Cash account records

Sync a bank account

If you want to track a savings or bank account alongside your investments in Sharesight, you can do so by setting up a Cash Account to represent it.

  1. Create a Cash Account in Sharesight to represent your bank or savings account.

  2. Choose a start date for your opening balance — typically the start of a calendar year (e.g. 1 January) or the start of a financial year (e.g. 1 July).

  3. Check your bank statement for the account balance on that date and add it as a transaction using the opening balance amount.

  4. From that point forward, record any deposits, withdrawals, or interest payments as cash transactions to keep the balance up to date. You can add transactions individually or bulk import them by exporting a CSV from your bank and importing it into your Cash Account.

Important notes

  • The value of your Cash Account is included when calculating your portfolio's value, but does not impact the percentage return figure.

  • You can only use this feature with Sharesight's built-in Cash Account feature.

  • Clicking on a Cash Account transaction that has been created from a synced trade will bring up the trade "edit" form. Cash Account transactions update automatically when the trade is edited. As these transactions are linked, it is not possible to edit the cash transaction separately from the underlying trade.

  • Updating a linked transaction will update the cash transaction value, and deleting a linked transaction will delete the corresponding linked cash transaction.

  • If a payout has been reinvested then it will not be linked to a cash transaction.

  • The net dividend amount for FX payouts is calculated using the exchange rates at the time of the payout.
