How can we help?

Add Foreign Currency

Add Foreign Currency

You can track foreign currency holdings alongside your investments in Sharesight. Foreign currencies are listed on the FX: Foreign Exchange Market and their value is automatically converted to your portfolio's base currency.

Add a foreign currency holding

  1. From your portfolio, click Add investments.

  2. Search by currency code (e.g. USD, EUR, GBP). Select the currency from the FX: Foreign Exchange Market results.

  3. Choose your transaction type:

    • Buy — if you purchased the currency at a known date and rate
    • Opening Balance — if you already hold the currency and want to record the current balance

Adding a Buy trade

  1. Enter the Trade date.

  2. Enter the Quantity — the amount of foreign currency purchased.

  3. Enter the Exchange rate at the date of the trade, or select the rate Sharesight provides automatically.

  4. Optionally enter any Brokerage fees (in either currency).

  5. Click Save trade.

Adding an Opening Balance

  1. Enter the Cost base — total cost of the foreign currency at the opening balance date.

  2. Enter the Quantity — the amount of foreign currency held.

  3. Sharesight calculates the Market value automatically using the current exchange rate. You can override this by editing the market price and exchange rate directly.

  4. Click Save trade.

Once added, your foreign currency appears under the Foreign Exchange Market (FX) group on your portfolio page. Click the holding to view performance, exchange rate history, and trade details.

To see which foreign currencies are supported, search by currency code when adding a holding. See Supported FX currencies for the full list.
