AI importer — upload any file format

AI importer — upload any file format

The AI importer is Sharesight's AI-powered file importer. It can read trade data from almost any file type — spreadsheets, PDFs, images, and screenshots — and import the trades directly into your portfolio.

What problem does it solve?

Sharesight's standard file importer requires files to be in an exact format. A small change to a broker's spreadsheet layout — a renamed column, a missing field — can cause the import to fail. Some brokers also produce spreadsheets with incomplete data that Sharesight cannot process at all, leaving users to manually reformat the file before importing.

The AI importer removes this barrier. Instead of requiring a perfectly structured file, it reads and interprets the data intelligently, as long as the key trade details are present.

What file types does it support?

  • Broker spreadsheets (any format, including those Sharesight does not natively support)
  • PDF trade confirmations
  • Screenshots of trade history
  • Images of statements or contract notes

Who is it most useful for?

  • Unsupported brokers — brokers whose spreadsheet format Sharesight cannot currently process with the standard importer
  • PDF trade confirmations — previously these had to be emailed to your portfolio email address; now you can upload them directly
  • Opening balances — quickly import a snapshot of your holdings from any statement or document
  • Users who prefer a simpler import flow — upload your file and let the AI importer do the formatting work
For brokers with an API integration or automatic trade confirmation email forwarding already set up, the AI importer is not required — your trades are already syncing automatically.

How to use the AI importer

  1. From your portfolio, click Add investment.

  2. Select Upload via a file.

  3. Select Upload any file format — this uses the AI importer. The previous option, Upload via spreadsheet, still exists for files already in Sharesight's standard format.

  4. Upload your file — spreadsheet, PDF, image, or screenshot.

  5. The AI importer will read the file and map the trade data. Review the trades before confirming the import.

How to enable or disable the AI importer

To use the AI importer, you need to enable two settings under Account > Account Preferences:

  1. Enable beta features
  2. Enable AI features

Both must be turned on. Once enabled, you will see the Upload any file format option after clicking + Add investment > Upload via file. When disabled, only the standard Upload via spreadsheet option is shown.

You can turn the AI importer off at any time by disabling either setting.
