Managed funds

What are managed funds?

A managed fund is a pooled investment vehicle where your money is combined with other investors and managed by a professional fund manager. Unlike ETFs, managed funds are not listed on a stock exchange — you invest directly with the fund manager or through a platform, and units are priced once per day based on the fund's net asset value (NAV).

Common examples include:

  • Vanguard Managed Funds (e.g. Vanguard Australian Shares Fund)
  • Dimensional Fund Advisors funds
  • Magellan funds
  • Platinum Asset Management funds
  • Pendal funds
Note: Some managed funds have an ASX-listed ETF equivalent (e.g. Vanguard Australian Shares Index ETF / VAS). The managed fund and ETF versions are separate products with different tax statements — this page covers the unlisted managed fund version only.

How distributions work

Managed funds distribute income to investors periodically — typically quarterly, half-yearly, or annually. At the end of each financial year, the fund manager issues an Annual Tax Statement (also called an AMMA statement — AMIT Member Annual Statement) that breaks down the tax components of all distributions you received during the year.

You will need to obtain this statement from your fund manager or the platform through which you invest (e.g. Netwealth, HUB24, BT Panorama).

Does Sharesight automatically update managed fund tax components?

No. Sharesight does not automatically update AMIT/AMMA tax components for managed funds. You will need to manually enter the components from your Annual Tax Statement each year.

How to enter managed fund AMIT components

The process is the same as for ETFs. See Australian AMIT tax components for step-by-step instructions on how to enter the components into Sharesight's Taxable Income Report.

Note: Sharesight does not provide taxation advice. If you have any questions about your tax position we recommend you contact your accountant or tax advisor.
