Format downloaded trade history files

Content also available for tax entities or on our global site.

To bulk upload your investments using the ‘File importer’ feature in Sharesight, your file must contain required information and formatting.

Open your downloaded historical trades file into your favourite spreadsheet software, such as Microsoft Excel or Apple Numbers. In the screenshot below, we’re using Google Sheets which is free and works on any computer.

Check that your file contains one row per trade and has a column for each of the following:

Compulsory Fields

Column HeaderDescriptionAccepted ValuesExample
Trade DateThe date of the tradedd/mm/yyyy (must be in this order, use 4 digits for year)22/05/2005
Instrument CodeThe instrument code (stock ticker, fund name, etc)codeTLS
Market CodeThe market codeASX, NZX, LSE, NYSE, NASDAQ, FUNDS NZ, FUNDS AU ASX

Price in DollarsThe price per share in the currency of the marketDecimal (up to 6dp)12.123456
Transaction TypeWhether the trade was a buy or sellBUY, SELLBUY

Most files contain other additional columns, this is fine.

The naming of the columns (column headers) is also unimportant as you will be asked to specify which column contains which piece of information during the import.

If your file is missing some of the above information, add it manually using your spreadsheet software.

When saving the file, be sure to save it in CSV format.
